Chief Justice DY Chandrachud urges voters to vote in general elections

Delhi. Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud urged citizens not to miss the opportunity to vote in the general elections, saying it is the “most important duty” in a constitutional democracy. “We are citizens of the largest democracy in the world, which is our country,” Justice Chandrachud said in a video message for the Election Commission’s ‘My Vote My Voice’ mission in view of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. ”The Constitution gives us many rights as citizens, but it also expects everyone to perform his duty assigned to him. One of the most important duties of citizenship in a constitutional democracy is to vote.” The Chief Justice (CJI) said, ”I would request all of you to please do this by voting responsibly as citizens of our great motherland. Don’t miss the opportunity. Five minutes every five years, for our country. It can be done, right? Come, vote with pride. My vote, my voice.” Justice Chandrachud said that citizens have a participatory role in electing the government and that is why it is said that ”this government is a government of the people, by the people and for the people.”

The CJI recounted how excited he was when he became a first-time voter and stood in the queue at the polling booth to exercise his franchise. He said, “When I vote, the ink on my finger creates a tremendous feeling of patriotism and connection with the nation…” Justice Chandrachud said, “Therefore our Constitution and our law provide a citizen, Provides for one vote and one value. I think this is the great tenacity and strength of our country as a constitutional democracy.’ The Chief Justice said that even when he was a lawyer and had to run here and there for work, he still wanted to do his duty of voting. Didn’t miss out. Voting for the election of 543 members of the Lok Sabha will be held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. The results will be declared on June 4.
